Heading Eastward...

Day -1

32 °C

Let's start with how this trip came to be...

I had been planning to travel for quite a while, originally thinking that I'd head off to New Zealand (which I'd visited before and loved) for a couple of months early 2011 and figured that as I'd gone that far, I'd add India (yes, I know, it isn't particularly close to New Zealand...). My plans changed abruptly in Spring 2010 with my taking a leave from work. I would then be traveling 6 months or so earlier than expected which meant I'd arrive in the Winter in New Zealand. Those who know me know that in the span of the last 6 or so years, I've gone from liking the cold to not particularly liking Quebec Winters and assumed that I wouldn't like a kiwi Winter either. So the direction of my travels was to change with NZ coming last so it would be Summer there, but a new problem arose: I was supposed to be in Switzerland Summer 2010... So like a child joining the dots... Switzerland - India - New Zealand - back to Canada with a few things in between...

So the plane ticket looks like:

Geneva, Switzerland (with side-trips to Italy, UK and Germany)
Istanbul, Turkey
Cairo, Egypt (with a possible side-trip to Jordan to see Petra)
New Delhi, India
Bangkok, Thailand (with possible side-trips to Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos or Burma)
Singapore, Singapore
Denpasar, Bali
Tokyo, Japan
Vancouver (with a possible side-trip to Seattle)
Montreal (with a possible side-trip with depression as my trip will be over :-(

Oddly, New Zealand is nowhere to be seen... I decided this trip should be more about India/South East Asia and figure I'll be heading back to NZ some other time anyway, so reallocated the 5 weeks I'd planned in NZ to India and SEA.

My challenge today is packing light for 5.5 months of travel...

So this is it (the guitar is not coming, unfortunately)...
